Civil Rights Sojourn Through the South

This itinerary is subject to change. A detailed itinerary document will be shared with participants once final details are confirmed. The trip will be filled with educational opportunities, and balanced with time to rest, recharge, and explore at your own pace.

We will kick of this course with an introductory day and night on Warren Wilson’s Campus. Out of town participants will be lodged on campus at the St. Clair Guest House.
Local participants will join for the day’s activities but return home to sleep.
During our time together in the Asheville area, we will have the chance to participate in the Hood Huggers tour, which tells the history of Black Asheville, visit a local archaeological site in Sandy Mush, and connect and reflect over dinner together.

The group will settle into their lodging in the Aloft hotel in the historic downtown district of Wilmington.

The group will share a nice meal and will tour historic sites with rich civil rights history, including the Bellamy Mansion and Poplar Grove Plantation. We will also have the opportunity to experience the WilimingtonNColor tour, exploring the Black history of Wilmington.

The group will travel to Greensboro and get settled into our hotel, the Biltmore Hotel Greensboro.
We will visit the International Civil Rights Center and museum as a group.

The group will travel from Greensboro to Birmingham, stopping in Atlanta to visit the National Center for Human and Civil Rights.
In Birmingham, we will check into our hotel, the Kelly Birmingham.

On our day in Birmingham, we will visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

The group will travel together for a day trip to Montgomery, where we will spend time at the Civil Rights Memorial Center. We’ll head back to Birmingham to stay the night.

Out of town participants will be lodged at St. Clare guest house on Warren Wilson’s campus, local Asheville folks will sleep at home that evening.

We will travel back from Birmingham to Swannanoa.
We’ll finish the course with a wrap up discussion and debrief and group dinner.
Folks from out of town will stay the night at the St. Clair Guesthouse. Local group members will head home.
