Cordage and Tulip Poplar Bark Bucket
Day 1: Cordage Making Immersion
-learn to process plant leaves, stalks and bark into fibers and produce a length of cordage you will use to stitch your bark container together.
- discussion and demo of selecting and processing locally found plant fibers for cordage making throughout the seasons including basswood, tulip poplar, dogbane and nettles.
Day 2: Bark Container Design/Build
-each participant will peel a section of tulip poplar bark that will become their folded bark foraging basket.
- design, shape and sew your basket with plenty of room for personalized touches.
- discuss tools, seasonality, other local bark types, historic/prehistoric uses and functionality.
The focus is on locally found natural materials, gathering considerations, local ecology and how making your own tools from nature can increase your connection to the seasons and to the earth!
