A Doorway to Malta: Exploring the Island’s Hidden History

Spend 10 days exploring the Mediterranean island nation of Malta, a fascinating series of islands just off the Southern coast of Italy. Your host is Ian Robertson, the beloved former Dean of Work and Garden Manager at Warren Wilson College, who has led many groups to Malta over the years. As always, Ian’s group will be warmly received and guided by Elaine Pirotta, Ian’s sister, who has lived in Malta for over 30 years. By day, the group will explore historic sites dating back to the neolithic area, enjoy scenic ferry rides and exploration of traditional villages, and will join Elaine’s Maltese “Ramblers” group for walks through the Maltese countryside. The evenings will be spent enjoying Mediterranean sunsets and the convivial atmosphere of Malta’s restaurants, pubs, and neighborhood festivities.

Begin your journey in the seaside town of Sliema, located on the northeast coast of Malta. Sliema is a major residential and commercial area and a center for shopping, bars, dining, and café life. Sliema is also known for its bustling coastal promenade, numerous rocky beaches, water sports and hotels. The group will stay at the Diplomat Hotel for six nights (with arrival the morning of May 15), and will enjoy Sliema’s proximity to many historical attractions including the historic walled capital city of Valletta (a short ferry ride from Sliema) and the Hypogeum (a neolithic subterranean structure). The group will spend a day visiting the Northern island of Gozo, a small agrarian island with a distinctly slower pace. They will also spend a day walking through the countryside with the Malta Ramblers, a group of Maltese walking enthusiasts of which Elaine has been a member and secretary for several decades.

From Sliema the group will move southward by private van to the coastal town of Marsaskala, where they will enjoy four days in this former fishing village that is decidedly more off the beaten path, and is where Ian’s sister Elaine resides. The town sits just north of St. Thomas Bay, which has sandy beaches popular with locals. With Marsaskala as a home base, the group will visit several historic sites and will also slow its pace to enjoy the beaches, cafés, seafood, and coastal promenade that the area offers. Group lodging will be at Eldoris Boutique Living for four nights in Marsaskala.

The trip will conclude with a final breakfast in Marsaskala on Saturday, May 24th and travel to the airport (just 20 minutes by private van), or folks can plan to continue their travels independently. The course fee includes all activities, accommodation, transportation, and most meals while in Malta. Airfare is not included. Included in the trip is an optional half-day orientation with Ian Robertson on the beautiful campus of Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC. For those traveling from elsewhere, there is the option to join this orientation virtually before meeting the group in Malta. In addition to a robust program of planned activities, there will be ample free time for participants to explore their own interests and unwind.

Activity levels will be moderate, with considerable walking each day (up to five miles). Some hiking may also be included, with alternative options for those who aren’t interested. Please think carefully about your level of fitness and whether or not this will be realistic for you prior to committing. Group size will be limited to 15 participants, and the spots are first come first serve. To reserve your spot, a deposit of $500 will need to be made by check. After registering, you’ll receive an invoice for the deposit along with instructions for where to mail your check.
